After months of being in office, it has become clear that Mr. Sarkozy, the new French President, is indeed, the real thing. His no-nonsense talk about the benefits of capitalism and the anti-socialistic agenda he subscribes to are indeed a reflection of how the French people themselves have become tired of being the backwards child in the European system. The Euro zone, which has thrived thanks to open markets has witnessed the resurgence of England, the unleashing of the Irish economic power, and the entrance of former communist states. Yet through all this new found prosperity, France has lagged behind. The tough measures it takes to reform a system based on socialistic policies are politically unpopular, but necessary. Perhaps, only a character as charismatic and outspoken as Sarkozy could accomplish a turnaround under these conditions.
The rift between France and the United States has grown over the past several decades from a mild cold shoulder to a verbally open dialogue of ridicule between the two countries. Yet, with Sarkozy’s election victory on a platform of US support and United States love, the French may be trying to redo their image as well as their economic system. The mandatory 35 hour work week may soon end, as the President aims to overthrow this law. In addition, he may soon tackle the extravagant social benefits and retirement perks that the French receive and may even attempt to reduce taxes. Such ideas are revolutionary in France, where the pendulum has been swinging towards a more socialistic system for the past three decades. If Sarkozy is successful in enacting change however, the French economy could have a lot to gain. While change will be slow, Mr. Sarkozy may be the only political figure in the country that could help return France to its former glory.
